Configuring Plain URLs for Numerous Lync Pools

by Jason Sloan on January 5th, 2012 | Five minute read

It’s becoming more and more common to see Lync deployments with a single Teleurgesteld domain ter organizations that have numerous geographically dispersed pools. However, deploying Lync within this script can cause fairly the confusion due to the different URLs Lync uses ter each pool. Typically, you can only have one set of URLs for an entire Verdrietig domain, regardless of the number of pools. The fattest problem: How do you keep conference URLs active for everyone else when one pool fails? Ter this article, I will concentrate only on deploying dedicated Plain URLs for a multi-pool company: Contoso, LLC.

Let’s make a few assumptions about the example organization up pui:

  • Contoso has spun off from Microsoft to become its own LLC (they were tired of all the jokes about being a fake company)
  • Contoso never leaped ship to use Google Apps and are fairly glad with the Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint 2010 and Lync Server 2010
  • Contoso has Two Pools, NAPool &, EUPool
  • Verdrietig domain is contosollc.com
  • Conferencing is strongly used to hold meetings with their business fucking partner, Adatum – located ter Europe and the United States

The basic Topology for Contoso LLC is represented te the following illustration:

During the deployment stages, the Fresh Topology Wizard walks you through the steps to finish your topology for publishing. The Plain URLs are created by default to use Dialin and Meet along with the Verdrietig Domain for the URL. Thesis are entirely editable, spil I display below. I switched my Elementary URLs to represent the conferences hosted ter the NA Pool, I then created the required DNS entries (dialin-na.contosollc.com, etc) to point users to the NA Pool servers.

So the conferencing capabilities are setup at this point so users te both the NA and EU pools can send out invites. Conferences are hosted on the NA Pool Servers, but spil mentioned above: 1) conferencing is very significant and Two) Pool Resiliency is a voorwaarde.

So what happens if the North America Pool goes down te this script? Well, the NA users failover to EU with limited capabilities, spil expected. But the users presently homed on the EU Pool should still have all the functionality of Lync available to them, onberispelijk? You would think so, however… Te this screenplay, EU users are impacted fairly powerfully. All Lync functionality stays the same for them with the exception of conferencing. If they attempt to create a conference, the conference will fail because the NA pool wasgoed hosting the URLs and URLs don’t failover. Now, all of Contoso LLC is ter a world of hurt, not just Contoso NA. Because no one can have conferences with Adatum and that has a profound effect on their widget-making business.

Unluckily, ter the Edit Properties screen cap above, you cannot just add te the URLs for the EU pool. The Ordinary URLs added to that properties opbergruimte can only support a single active URL. If you add EU URLs, all conferences are hosted on EU, so now the point of failure is just shifted to EU. Not all is lost however, because wij can add the extra set of URLs using the Lync Management Shell! Shout out to Haiku !

Adding the Extra URLs to Each Pool

This step is mandatory for the URLs and vereiste be read cautiously . The directives vereiste reflect the fresh URLs you want to use for the extra Pool(s) and also the Webpagina name created for the pool(s). Wij will keep the NA URLs above, so the NA Pool is taken care of with https://dialin-NA.contosollc.com and https://meet-na.contosollc.com. This step is to create https://dial-eu.contosollc.com and https://meet-eu.contosollc.com.

  1. Open the Lync Server Management Shell
  2. At the Lync Management Shell, inject the following instruction:
  1. Once the directive has bot entered, press Inject
  2. Next, inject the following directive:
  1. Once the directive has bot entered, press Inject
  2. Next, inject the following instruction:
  1. Once the instruction has bot entered, press Inject
  2. Next, come in the following directive:
  1. Once the instruction has bot entered, press Inject
  2. Next, inject the following instruction:
  1. Once the guideline has bot entered, press Come in
  2. Next, come in the following instruction:
  1. Once the instruction has bot entered, press Come in
  2. After all directions have bot successfully executed, come in the following instruction:
  1. Once the guideline has bot entered, press Come in
  2. Close the Management Shell window

Once thesis steps are accomplish, you vereiste run the Certificate Request from the Deployment Wizard on each Vooraanzicht End Server ter the EU pool. This will add the fresh Elementary URLs to the certificate. Also, you voorwaarde create the adequate DNS entries to match the fresh URLs spil well. Once this is accomplish, the meeting requests will now reflect the fresh URLs for the EU users when meetings are created.

Five thoughts on &ldquo, Configuring Plain URLs for Numerous Lync Pools &rdquo,

DID geo dns address this punt?

simply good Artical Thanks

Thanks Jason – I’m also beginning a deployment like this so will keep you posted on the outcome.

Sorry for late reply. You are keurig on the very first part of your comment to the blog postbode, I wrote this postbode from a script with EU and NA pool and wij did deploy Edges and RPs te both locations. The traffic flows were ingewikkeld and required some detail visio’s and explanation!

Spil for the fresh pairing capabilities ter Lync Server 2013- Spil I’m sure you and I both know, wij toevluchthaven’t had a chance to detect all the nuances of Lync Server 2013 that our Lync community found te Lync 2010. At very first release, I wasgoed wondering the same thing, “How do wij treat URL’s based on how Lync Server 2010 worked?” So, I’m ter the middle of my very first run of Lync Server 2013 migrations so I’m unraveling those thoughts spil I type this.

Te a paired screenplay, both Pools serve the plain URLs identically using the same names. Albeit your DNS will be sending Meet/Dialin to a single Pool such spil the NA pool, EU users will still have their conference spawn and remain hosted on the EU Pool even tho’ their web request will go to the NA pool. Te the event that NA goes down, you would simply point the Meet/Dialin A-records to EU, or have DNS TTL set to automatically use the EU Pool if NA expired. You will not, however redirect webservices. Once you are moved during Failover, you are not part of that pool, so you would use the webservices URL of that pool.

If you have discovered anything to the contrary, please reply!

Nice article Jason!

From a bandwith and meeting practice perspective it also might make sense to do this to keep meeting traffic islolated to the respective pools. This would also required a local Proxy and Edge server te each webpagina. It also increases complexity which should be considered too…,

I’m wondering how this might switch if this company wasgoed now running Lync 2013? Assuming they were doing paired pools, conferencing for NA users would be restored on EU pool once an admin initiated a CSPoolFailover from NA Pool to EU Pool.

You would then need to redirect the elementary urls and outer web services to the EU Switch sides Proxy. Screenplay would also require an Edge Server running te EU webpagina and suitable DNS records setup.

Interested ter your thoughts on this.

Creation of url connection pool te java

I have some code like this te a method :

This method is called many times from the client side. I wish I could create a connection pool and reuse the same spil needed.

Is it possible to do so te Java?

Thanks te advance

1 Response

Pooling HTTP connection is similar to other pooling object.

  • use a factory to get an example of your HTTP connections
  • dont leave behind to release it, via the factory, to your pool when no more used
  • te your pool management don’t leave behind to check and close your connections.

I don’t advise you to re-code all pool management, but rather use existing librairies like Jakarta Commons-pool.

Jakarta Commons-pool enable you :

  • to reject immediatly request of fresh HTTP connection with a “pool tired exception”
  • to increase pool size despite his thresholds
  • to wait during N ms, expecting a free HTTP connection (exception after delay).

Please accomplish the security check to access 1coinpool.com

Why do I have to accomplish a CAPTCHA?

Completing the CAPTCHA proves you are a human and gives you improvised access to the web property.

What can I do to prevent this ter the future?

If you are on a individual connection, like at huis, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware.

If you are at an office or collective network, you can ask the network administrator to run a scan across the network looking for misconfigured or infected devices.
